Trompe l'oeil is a French term meaning "to fool the eye," and it refers to a highly realistic artistic technique that uses precise perspective and shading to create an optical illusion of three-dimensional depth on a two-dimensional surface. The purpose is to trick the viewer into believing that the painted objects or scenes are real.
