This striking hand-carved limestone sculpture by New York studio artist John J. Gallogly (b. early 1930s, Defreestville NY) is a powerful example of mid-century American stone carving. Created in the 1970s, the piece showcases Gallogly’s distinctive approach—solid, architectural, and deeply textural, with expressive chisel work that emphasizes form and mass.
The sculpture has tremendous physical presence at 45 lbs, giving it the grounded, monolithic quality associated with Brutalist and modernist stone work. Its dimensionality (12”H × 9”D × 7”W) allows it to visually anchor a console, pedestal, or gallery environment. The stone’s naturally variegated surface adds warmth and organic character.
Gallogly studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in the early 1950s and later trained privately under noted Niskayuna sculptor Robert Blood, known for large-scale public stone commissions. He traveled extensively through Europe in the late 1950s and 1960s, absorbing classical and modern sculptural traditions. Throughout his life, he produced stone carvings, metalwork, and hundreds of sketches—most pieces remaining in private family collections.
This sculpture is a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial and highly tactile example of his work.
