George Baxter, "The Lover's Mailbox" (1860),
with Baxter's stamp in the lower left corner.
Lithograph 27.2 x 37.8 cm, mounted on cardboard with overall dimensions of 46.7 x 35 cm.
George Baxter's patented printing process was developed by him and patented in 1835.
This made color prints more accessible, as they no longer needed to be hand-painted. However, his process remained quite complex: lithographs were printed from a steel plate, and then oil paint was added using individual woodblocks, one for each color.
Therefore, prints like these required the individual application of five or six woodblocks to complete.
