Louis Étienne Timmermans was born to French parents in 1846 in Brussels, Belgium. He died in 1910, in Paris. He was a student at the Académie de Bruxelles (Brussels Academy) and also trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Although he painted some landscapes, Timmermans is primarily known as a marine artist: he painted seascapes, coastal harbours, fishing boats, and rivers. He also created landscapes and worked in watercolour in addition to oil. His seascapes are often realistic and atmospheric, capturing small ports in Brittany, Normandy, and along the Seine in Paris. He was especially sensitive to the mood and light of fishing harbours and coastal life.
Timmerman’s works were exhibited regularly and he enjoyed some contemporary recognition. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français (the French Salon), and received a commendation in1904.
His works have appeared in numerous auction houses and have commanded consistently high prices throughout the twentieth century, suggesting a solid collector base for his works.
Although Belgian by birth, Timmermans worked mostly in France. He painted coastal scenes in Normandy (e.g. Cherbourg, Honfleur) and Brittany, as well as river scenes (e.g. the Seine in Paris).
Timmerman’s style is realistic, but also lyrical; he plays with light and water in a way that gives his marine scenes a luminous, atmospheric quality. He worked on both panel and on canvas, and also produced watercolours.
Timmermans belongs to a tradition of 19th-century realist marine painters, but his particular sensitivity to small fishing ports and coastal atmosphere gives his work a personal and intimate character. His training in both Brussels and Paris means he bridged Belgian and French art worlds; working in France, he absorbed and reflected the coastal light and maritime culture of Normandy and Brittany.
Today Timmerman’s work is valuable to collectors interested in maritime history, Belgian art, or turn-of-the-century realism. The Roussel Gallery in Louviers and the River Meuse in Rotterdam hold examples of his work.
This evocative original oil on panel painting titled A Fisherman’s Burial at Sea is a powerful maritime artwork by Belgian artist Louis Etienne Timmermans (1846–1910). The composition captures a poignant moment on calm waters as traditional fishing vessels gather to honour a fallen comrade. The artist skilfully portrays figures aboard the boats, their presence expressive yet delicately rendered, set against shimmering green-blue water and a distant shoreline beneath a softly clouded sky.
Executed with fluid brushwork and atmospheric realism, the painting highlights Timmermans’ mastery of marine art and 19th-century coastal life. The work is signed clearly in the lower left section by the artist, ensuring authenticity.
This piece is a fine example of Timmermans’ sought-after maritime scenes, blending human emotion, historical fishing traditions, and natural light in a serene and moving tribute. Ideal for collectors of 19th-century Belgian art, nautical paintings, maritime history, or realist oil works, this painting offers both artistic quality and emotional depth.
