Austere elegance and artisanal craft converge in this rare set of six dining chairs, crafted in the Netherlands between 1915 and 1925. Produced by the Amsterdam-based firm ''t Woonhuys', these pieces are exemplary of the Amsterdam School style, a movement that sought to merge expressive design with traditional handwork and solid materials.
Design
Constructed in solid oak, the set comprises two armchairs and four dining chairs. Each features high, straight backs with subtly chamfered tops and thick vertical supports, giving the design a sculptural and architectural profile. The bold oak frames are offset by crimson red velvet upholstery, affixed using large-headed brass nails. The front legs of the armchairs culminate in finely carved lion heads, introducing a symbolic and slightly whimsical element typical of the movement’s more expressive tendencies.
The armrests and stretchers are made from a darker tropical hardwood, coromandel, introducing a restrained material contrast that echoes the movement's interest in dynamic visual rhythm. This subtle interplay between carved ornament, severe geometry, and noble materials is emblematic of Dutch expressionist design. While unlabelled, the craftsmanship and design language suggest a connection to designers such as Hildo Krop. It may also possibly be the work of Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, one of the most important early proponents of the Amsterdam School, known for his stylised and richly crafted interiors and ship furnishings.
The chairs have the metal plate of 't Woonhuys underneath them.
Condition
The condition of the chairs is very good. Woodwork is structurally sound, with minor surface marks consistent with age. Upholstery is in good condition, however we can offer options for re-upholstery. This piece has an attribution mark,
