Damien Hirst – Dot Spin Painting, 2009
Acrylic on paper, presented in a museum-grade acrylic case with transparent sides and gold leaf wooden backing.
Created in 2009 to celebrate the inauguration of the PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv, Ukraine, Dot Spin Painting is part of Damien Hirst’s celebrated Spin Paintings series. Conceived as an exploration of chance, energy, and optimism, the work embodies the artist’s fascination with color and movement.
Through a spinning mechanism, pigments are projected across the surface, generating fluid transitions and dynamic forms that cannot be replicated, making each piece entirely unique. Hirst himself described these works as “a massive explosion of energy, full of life, color, and optimism.”
This particular painting is distinguished by its circular format and vibrant chromatic balance, which highlight the dynamic rhythm characteristic of the Spin Paintings series. Echoing the legacy of action painting while reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens, it connects to the gestural vitality of Jackson Pollock while asserting its own radical aesthetic.
Signed by the artist on the reverse against the gold-leaf wooden backing, Dot Spin Painting is housed in its original museum-quality acrylic case, enhancing the luminosity and depth of the composition.
A rare and highly desirable work from the Spin Paintings series, sought after by collectors worldwide as an authentic creation from one of Britain’s most influential contemporary artists.
