This rare and highly decorative 19th century red lacquer cabinet is called a “Wedding Cabinet.” In ancient China, these were made as dowries by families of brides, with size and embellishment an indication of the family’s wealth and social standing. They were painted red to symbolize good luck and prosperity. This cabinet’s intricately carved and highly decorative crown suggest a family of considerable standing.
This tall cabinet was handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with the elegance of Ming dynasty simplicity. The cabinet’s structure, which is consistent with traditional, handcrafted Chinese furniture, confirms its authenticity: the two large, easily removable doors supported by wooden hinges; and the tenon and mortise joinery requiring no glue nails or other mechanical joining device. The doors feature a large, round bronze moon-shaped face-plate and etched bronze pulls that open to reveal one shelf, two small drawers and great storage possibilities.
This solid piece has been well-maintained in its beautifully-aged, original lacquer finish. The scale and magnificence of this very rare cabinet would make a stunning statement in a large reception or living area or serve as a functional bar or entertainment cabinet.
