The painting is richly layered, with creams, yellows, greens, blues and orange tones merging to form a complex, tactile surface. Organic and geometric forms drift across the composition, their softened edges creating a sense of rhythm and movement. Though abstract, the work has a subtle figurative undercurrent, typical of smith’s lyrical approach. This piece represents smith’s mature period in the late 1980s, when his colour harmonies and expressive mark-making became his defining language. Created in 1989 and presented in its original solid wood float frame with a subtle shadow gap. A related work by the artist, painted in 1990, of matching size and identical frame, is also available from hutt.
