Born in glasgow, he trained at the glasgow school of art under david donaldson, developing a painterly language that bridges figuration and abstraction. A member of the royal scottish watercolour society, the royal glasgow institute of the fine arts, and the paisley art institute, smith has exhibited widely throughout the uk. His work has appeared at the royal scottish academy, royal glasgow institute annual exhibitions, the open eye gallery and the scottish gallery, edinburgh. His paintings are held in public and private collections across scotland, including glasgow art club. Smith’s contemporaries include fellow scottish modern painters james d. Robertson and john cunningham, with whom he shared exhibition platforms and a dedication to painterly abstraction. See less
