This work continues smith’s exploration of layered abstraction, combining cool and warm tones — soft creams, blues, greens and ochres — in a balanced, rhythmic composition. The paint has been built up in translucent and opaque layers, creating depth and texture across the surface. Shapes emerge and dissolve within the field, echoing organic forms yet remaining non-representational. The painting exemplifies smith’s lyrical style and mastery of colour relationships, characteristic of his mature work during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Presented in its original solid wood float frame with a subtle shadow gap, matching the 1989 companion piece in design and dimensions (5mm size difference). A related work by the artist, painted in 1989, is also available from hutt, making an ideal complementary pairing. Smith r.s.w., r.g.i., p.a.i. (b.1946) is a respected scottish painter celebrated for his expressive abstract compositions and refined use of colour. Born in glasgow, he trained at the glasgow school of art under david donaldson, developing a painterly language that bridges figuration and abstraction. A member of the royal scottish watercolour society, the royal glasgow institute of the fine arts, and the paisley art institute, smith has exhibited widely throughout the uk. His work has appeared at the royal scottish academy, royal glasgow institute annual exhibitions, the open eye gallery and the scottish gallery, edinburgh. His paintings are held in public and private collections across scotland, including glasgow art club. Smith’s contemporaries include fellow scottish modern painters james d. Robertson and john cunningham, with whom he shared exhibition platforms and a dedication to painterly abstraction. See less
