An outstanding Biedermeier secretaire crafted from beautifully figured, flame-mahogany veneer. This impressive piece reflects the refined architectural forms typical of high-quality workshops in Northern Germany during the first half of the 19th century.
Architectural Tabernacle Superstructure
The top features an elegant architectural superstructure in the form of a miniature temple (often referred to as a tabernacle). It consists of a central cabinet with a temple-front design and two cylindrical side compartments. Original 19th-century bronze fittings enrich the composition and emphasize the luxurious character of the piece.
Writing Drawer with Fold-Down Leather Surface
The upper drawer pulls forward and simultaneously lowers the writing surface, which is lined with black leather. Two additional hinged side wings expand the workspace, offering a comfortable and functional writing area.
Richly Structured Interior
Opening the secretaire reveals an exquisite interior with numerous small drawers, compartments, and a central storage niche. The arrangement is framed by slender black columns—an iconic feature of superior Biedermeier craftsmanship. All drawers are veneered in carefully selected mahogany, with many original locks and keys preserved.
Lower Section
The lower part consists of three full-width drawers, all veneered in matched flame mahogany and fully functional, each equipped with a working lock.
Restoration and Condition
The piece has undergone a professional conservation-grade restoration:
– the structure has been reinforced,
– veneers were carefully repaired and matched,
– the entire surface has been finished with a traditional shellac French polish,
– all locks, drawers, and mechanisms operate perfectly.
The piece is constructed in three separate sections — the tabernacle top, the central writing unit, and the lower chest — which makes handling and moving this heavy secretaire significantly easier.
Summary
A rare and highly refined Biedermeier secretaire distinguished by its architectural presence, exceptional flame-mahogany veneer, and meticulous craftsmanship. An outstanding statement piece for elegant interiors, distinguished offices, and sophisticated antique collections.
