The two figures, though being of non-African appearance, are made in the tradition of African folk art of so called "stick figures". Such figures are hand carved of ebony wood, and typically depict aboriginal people. Obviously, the artist who carved these figures was experimenting with his subject matter, and was not afraid to break away from the tradition. Still, tradition is strongly present here: the female figure carries a baby on her chest and a jug on her head, which is characteristic of African folk sculpture. The artist demonstrates outstanding craftsmanship being able to carve faces, fabric, and other details with elegance and elaboration. The figures are very tall, 19" and 21", which makes them rare and valuable. They could have been made in Kenya, where the "stick figures" are typically made, and judging by the appearance and details, sometime in early XX century. See less
