A patriotic silk and metallic thread trapunto embroidered souvenir from around the late 19th century. It has a black silk background with an American Eagle in flight carrying a set of American flags and a shield in the center with the three arrows and olive branch below. At the bottom it shows the banner with E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one) sewn inside it. The flag shield has 3 stars and the side flags have a total of 17 stars. All total together there is 20 stars. The eagle has a glass eye and there is metallic thread accenting many different areas throughout the piece. I believe it's in the original stained wood frame, with the frame makers label reading L. Handelson. This banner was more than likely made in Japan as a souvenir for sailors and American travelers.

The blue of the flag is more of a light gray blue which seems like it started like a lighter blue but could possibly be from fading over time. The frame has some scratches and rubbing but in overall good condition. The paper backing has some tears. I can't see any visible scratches on the glass but there may be surface scratches, not easily visible. Has not been taken out of frame for inspection. Please see photos for more details. less
