Charles Picart le Doux (1881–1959) was a French painter, engraver, poet, and author known for his post-Impressionist style and his involvement in the Montmartre art scene. He studied at the Académie Julian and Beaux-Arts de Paris, was influenced by Impressionists like Manet and Monet, and was deeply affected by his service as a nurse in World War I, which led to a pacifist and social dimension in his later work. He was a member of the Salon d'Automne and the National Society of Fine Arts, and his career included solo exhibitions, international recognition, and public decoration projects.
He was born in Paris on July 12, 1881 and came from a family of artists, and his grandfather, Louis Charles Auguste Picart Le Doux, taught him to draw. He studied at the Académie Julian under Marcel Baschet and later at the Beaux-Arts de Paris until 1902.
Picart le Doux moved to Montmartre in 1902 and became part of a circle that included Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo.
He was influenced by the Impressionist and post-Impressionist works he saw at the Durand-Ruel gallery, which he said "had the revelation that painting should be 'the expression of life'". His early work was exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1904.
Serving as a nurse during World War I profoundly impacted his work, instilling a deep sense of empathy and leading him to support pacifist movements.
After a period of depression, he resumed painting in the 1920s and had his first major solo exhibition in 1910 at the Biot gallery. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1933 and became a professor at the Académie Colarossi and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
He decorated the ceilings of the ocean liner "Normandie".
He created tapestries, illustrated books, and was a prolific portraitist, he became involved in public decoration after the war, notably at the town hall of the 14th arrondissement in Paris. His work can be found in prestigious galleries internationally.
