Antique Murano glass table lamp, handblown in cobalt blue crystal, attributed to Barovier & Toso, 1920`s ca, Italian.
This antique lamp has been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. It is newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. It has the following new components: brass lamp holder with 2 shade rings, gold silk cable, white cord switch, white plug (UK Plug up to 250V) & fabric lampshade. Lightbulb included. This lamp can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this light in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.
Presented here is an antique Murano handblown glass table lamp which form and techniques suggest an attribution to Barovier & Toso, one of Murano’s most historic and influential glasshouses active in Italy during the early 20th Century. The combination of cobalt glass, applied clear glass scrolls, and a rhythmically tiered body aligns with their sculptural production between the 1910`s to 1930`s. Barovier & Toso were celebrated for bold color, refined handwork, and inventive decorative applications, qualities strongly reflected in this piece. Cobalt blue was one of the most prized Murano colors: intense, even, and luminous.
While unsigned, the lamp’s stylistic language, construction, and use of clear decorative elements fit closely within the Barovier workshop’s aesthetic vocabulary of the period between late Venetian tradition and early Art Deco influence.
The sculptural form, bold colour & delicate size make this lamp well proportioned for a side table, bedside, console, desk or sideboard. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.
It features a striking sculptural silhouette that showcases the skill and precision of early 20th Century Venetian glassmaking. The body is formed in deep cobalt blue crystal, shaped into a tall, slender column that gently swells and narrows in a rhythmic vertical sequence. Three distinct bulbous sections create a tiered profile, each separated by applied clear-glass scrolls that encircle the form like decorative fins, adding depth, texture, and visual movement. These clear accents enhance the lamp’s contour and provide a refined contrast against the rich cobalt body. The circular base is crafted from blue crystal, having a vertical clear scrolling trim around the bottom. The overall effect is elegant yet bold.
The antique original manufacturer`s paper label "MADE IN ITALY" is still present, attached to the bottom.
At the top the lamp is finished with the original antique brass polished neck leading to the new quality solid brass lamp holder with two removable brass rings to secure the lampshade in place.
The lamp is finished with a new cream fabric lampshade, this has adjustable internal arms to change the angle of the shade. This lampshade is included in the price.
Carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 60 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with a new LED 3.4 Watt dimmable Candle Clear shaped light bulb (equivalent of 40 Watts), included in the price.

BAROVIER & TOSO LIGHTING HISTORY
The Barovier family from Murano, Italy, have been world leaders in glass production since the Middle Ages. The Company was founded in 1295.
Through their history they have invented many glass forms and techniques such as mother-of-pearl glass. In the XX Century Barovier designs became increasing innovative leading to collaborations with great designers such as Gio Ponti. It is no surprise that works by cofounder Ercole Barovier (1889–1974) can be seen in many museums worldwide.
Ercole Barovier began his movement towards Modernism in the 1930`s with his `Primavera` series of vases and animal sculptures; idiosyncratic milky-white & clear glass filled with tiny bubbles & hairline interior fissures. These were produced for Artisti Barovier, a firm headed by his father & uncle.
In 1939 the company merged with the Toso family to become “Barovier & Toso”.
