This historic view documents traditional batak architecture with steeply pitched roofs, surrounded by dense tropical forest, capturing a community scene before widespread industrial development reached the region. Kleingrothe was one of the most respected photographers working in the netherlands east indies, and his prints are an important visual record of indonesian cultural and colonial history. The printed captions beneath the image appear in three languages, indicating its intended use for an international audience: “bataks kampong / roema kampong / kampong”. Printed on thick paper with wide margins and retaining the original plate mark. A desirable piece for collectors of sumatra, indonesian ethnography, or early 20th-century photography.
