Gardiner, New York, an American maker active in the 19th century. This lamp began life as an oil-burning Argand and was later converted to electric lighting, a common and practical update for historic lamps as homes transitioned away from oil.

The lamp retains its substantial brass body with elegant proportions and a clearly legible maker’s mark. The glass shade is not original to the lamp but is well matched in form and scale. There is minor damage to the glass consistent with age and use, visible on close inspection, and reflected in pricing.

This is a strong decorative antique with real presence – equally suited to traditional, historic, or eclectic interiors – and far preferable to modern reproductions. Electrification makes it usable as everyday ambient lighting while preserving the character of an early American Argand form. See less
