A vibrant and evocative piece of authentic Brazilian popular art, this hand-painted clay sculpture captures the heart and soul of life in the Northeast region (sertão). This piece embodies the iconic style made famous by the great master Mestre Vitalino and carried on by subsequent generations of celebrated artisans, including the Rodrigues family, such as Antônio Rodrigues.
The figurine depicts a woman in a bright yellow dress with red polka dots, balancing a bundle of goods (a trouxa) on her head. She holds an infant child in her arms and has a pipe in her mouth. This imagery reflects timeless scenes of maternal strength and daily life in rural Brazil, where balancing goods on the head is a common practice.
