Fascinating pair of large Japanese 19th century Edo period six-panel folding byobu screens depicting the legend of Minamoto No Yorimasa (Japanese Samurai 1106-1180). The pair of paintings tell the tale of Minamoto killing the mythical nue. The paintings are crafted in the Kano school working in a Tosa school manner. The paintings have vibrant ink and natural color pigments with radiant gold leaf accents throughout. The scenes are set in black lacquered distressed frames with a silk brocade border. Beautifully painted with amazing details and brushwork. The paintings have weathered patina commensurate age and use. Sold as a pair. From an estate in Beverly Hills, CA.
