In this dusky and dramatic diptych by Jaume Llorens Bach, the dense canopy of trees evolves into an abundant cluster of flower bushes.

The slender silhouettes of the tree trunks below soar skywards and reach deep into the heart of these bushes, rendering a whole that resembles an idealised canopy of trees.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
