Striking Antique Korean Commode
A magnificent example of functional artistry from Korea, this brass-mounted chest embodies the restrained elegance (19th - Early 20th Century). Crafted from traditional Korean hardwood, such as Elmwood or Paulownia, the chest features a rich, deep oxblood or reddish-brown finish achieved through multiple layers of lacquer or staining. The design seamlessly blends storage solutions, featuring a bank of functional drawers on the left and a central door compartment on the right.
This style of low chest (Munjang or Jang) was historically placed in the anchae (the women's inner quarters of a traditional Korean home) for the storage of valuable possessions, such as fine linens, silks, documents, or personal items.
Its most notable feature is the masterful use of brass hardware (Changsok). The metal fittings, including the corner reinforcements, hinges, drawer pulls, and lock escutcheon, are not merely decorative but were traditionally hand-hammered and used to stabilize and strengthen the wood panels. The polished brass contrasts beautifully with the dark wood, often featuring symbolic motifs (such as stylized bats or butterflies, which represent good luck, wealth, and happiness), embodying the functional yet auspicious nature of traditional Korean furniture.

"This Late Joseon Dynasty cabinet is offered in excellent antique condition. It possesses a beautiful, age-appropriate patina and rich color. Any minor imperfections—such as fine surface wear, natural wood shrinkage lines, and the deep tarnish on the original brass fittings—are signs of its authenticity and historical journey, adding to its character and value. The structure is robust and all elements are functional." less
