A striking plein-air harbor scene by listed California painter Carl Roessler, signed and dated 1936 with the location San Pedro. This dynamic oil captures a working ship moored at the docks, with two figures in a small skiff and soft Pacific light rippling across the water. Roessler’s loose, confident brushwork and tonal palette give the painting a wonderfully moody California–Impressionist character.
The work remains in its original 1930s carved wood frame with a linen-wrapped liner. The linen shows age-expected discoloration, completely typical of frames from this era. The painting surface appears stable and would benefit from a light cleaning, which I’ve left to the discretion of the buyer.
About the Artist:
Carl Roessler was an American painter active during the early–mid 20th century, known for his evocative maritime scenes of San Pedro, Los Angeles Harbor, and other West Coast working ports. His paintings often portray real, unromanticized labor—ships under load, tugboats, fishermen, and waterfront movement—captured with expressive strokes and a strong sense of atmosphere. While not widely documented in major academic circles, Roessler holds a respected place among regional California maritime artists, and his dated, location-inscribed works are particularly sought after by collectors of early California coastal art.
