The helmet at the bottom right could indicate that the figure was a knight, allude to the defense of his family, or that the figure was historically engaged on the military front. The gentleman shows, in his appearance and dazzling manner, characteristic traits of the Enlightenment era, similarly the pompous and rich dress of various fabrics and embroidery and rich velvet cloaks, which the painter has been able to naturally render, just as the interesting detail of the right hand resting on the pommel of a walking stick, showing a conspicuous ruby ring. The effigy was captured in a natural figure with a three-quarter view and diagonal body, showing the richness of his costume and proud, confident face turned to the viewer, in a way of portraying that recalls that of the classicists of the second half of the 17th century such as Andrea Sacchi and Carlo Maratti, which will have repercussions in the triumphant and Rococo painting of Pompeo Batoni. Anonymous Roman school portraitist active in the Papal States during the first half of the 18th century. The dimensions of the painting are: canvas 74cm x 99cm frame 94cm x 120. The "Salvator Rosa" carved and gilded frame is contemporary to the painting and therefore from the first half of the 18th century. The painting is in good overall condition, it is on its original canvas, and appears well cleaned in the vivid pigmentation of the pictorial surface. See less
