1. Wood preparation

• wood was air-dried for years (not artificially)

• selection based on grain and color

• veneer was hand-sawn with a veneer chisel

(c. 2-4 mm thick, much thicker than modern veneers)

2. Construction

• tenon joints: all wood joints are made with traditional dovetail and mortise and tenon joints

• gluing: historically done with hide glue (reversible)

• no screws or metal fittings – purely wood-based construction

• sabre legs: carved and bent from solid cherry wood

3. Inlays

• diamond-shaped inlay in the crossbar

• wood was hand-cut and inlaid

• ebonized with iron stain or ink

• precise fitting demonstrates high craftsmanship

4. Veneer technique

• backrest with hand-cut cherry veneer

• veneer sheet was mirrored symmetrically for decorative grain

• applied with hot glue and fixed with veneer presses

• traditional veneering without modern adhesives

5. Surface treatment

• sanding with fine sand and horsetail

• multi-layered shellac polish (6-12 passes)

• each layer applied by hand with polishing balm

• finished with beeswax for a silky sheen

6. Upholstery (historical)

• woven linen straps stretched over the frame

• multi-layered horsehair padding

• hemp cord fastening
