A striking and beautifully crafted example of the folk-woodworking tradition known as Tramp Art. This hand-carved wooden frame showcases chip-carving (notched edges) in layered wood pieces, each manually cut and assembled into bold geometric relief featuring raised diamond motifs at the corners and dramatic pointed triangular extensions. It has a glass in perfect condition too. Ready to hang on your wall.
Origin: Likely Central or Eastern Europe, circa late 19th century to early 20th century (c. 1880-1920). The style emerged around this period, particularly flourishing between the 1870s and 1940s.
Material: Hand-carved wood (dark stained), chip-carved technique.
Technique: Traditional “tramp art” chip carving: layers of reclaimed/secondary wood were notch-cut, stacked, glued or nailed to form layered reliefs.
Measurements: Outer frame 28 cm × 18 cm. Inner opening 15 cm × 8 cm.
Condition: Very good antique condition
This frame is both decorative and collectable. It works beautifully to hold a small photograph, icon or artwork, or simply to be displayed as an object in its own right. The craftsmanship speaks to a vernacular art form of resourcefulness and folk-creativity.
