Drawn and engraved by J. Walz, this print presents the traditional attire of a Maragato — a member of a historic trading and muleteer community from the mountainous León region, whose distinctive dress and customs were renowned throughout Spain. The figure is depicted standing confidently, leaning on a walking stick, and wearing the characteristic wide-brimmed hat, short jacket, and voluminous breeches that define the Maragato costume. The deep brown tones of his garments are offset by bright red accents at the cuffs and vest, suggesting both practicality and regional pride. His sturdy boots and heavy belt complete the image of a hardworking traveler, typical of the Maragatos, who for centuries transported goods between Madrid, Galicia, and northern Spain. The Musée de Costumes series, from which this print originates, reflects the 19th-century French fascination with ethnographic studies and the preservation of traditional European attire. Each plate was lithographed with extraordinary precision, then delicately hand-colored to highlight fabrics, folds, and textures. This work not only offers a glimpse into the fashion of rural Spain but also captures the spirit of a proud and independent people whose distinct identity endured for generations. Condition report: Excellent impression with clean lines and vivid hand-coloring. Slight toning at the sheet edges and minimal foxing typical of the period, not affecting the image. Wide original margins remain intact. Framing tips: A light cream or soft beige mat with a walnut or dark gilt frame will enhance the earthy tones and red detailing of the costume. This piece pairs beautifully with other Iberian costume prints from the same series, forming an elegant historical ensemble. Technique: Hand-colored lithograph Maker: J.
