A striking large-scale Tramp Art frame, hand carved in the late 19th or early 20th century in Central or Eastern Europe. This example stands out for its sculptural geometric construction, deep step-carved layers and bold cruciform corner blocks, all executed in the traditional Tramp Art vocabulary of individually chip-carved wood elements built up in relief.
The frame retains traces of its original warm golden surface, a finish sometimes applied to higher-status Tramp Art pieces in the early 1900s. The gilded wash highlights the stepped notches and faceted pyramidal carvings, giving the piece both folk-art tactility and decorative presence.
This frame was made using the classic method of the Tramp Art tradition, which flourished across Europe between the 1870s and the 1930s. The technique involved recycling thin woods and chip carving them into layers that were stacked and nailed to create rich texture and sculptural depth.
Origin: Central or Eastern Europe, circa 1880 to 1920
Material: Hand carved wood with original golden surface
Technique: Traditional chip-carved Tramp Art construction
Measurements:
75 cm x 35cm
Condition:
Good antique condition with age-related wear and losses typical for Tramp Art of this scale. Areas of minor chipping and small historical repairs are visible in the photographs. The golden surface shows natural patina and variation. No backing board.
This frame is ideal for artwork, a mirror plate or as a standalone sculptural object. The size, strong geometry and rare gilded finish make it a highly desirable collectible for both folk-art and design-focused interiors.
