Large French, early 20th century Impressionist southern France street scene of her native village by Mathilde Frances. The painting is signed and dated bottom left and has the original exhibition label and stamp from the Salon des Artistes from 1931. Presented in a fine gilt wood and patinated custom wood frame.
This wonderful atmospheric painting captures a serene, sunlit typical Southern French village scene, where two elderly ladies engage in conversation. They are seated comfortably on a rustic bench, exuding a sense of quiet camaraderie. The composition is framed by timeworn buildings, boasting a palette of earthy tones that contrast beautifully against the bright blue sky. An arched passageway in the background offers depth, drawing the viewer’s eye into the heart of the village. The play of light and shadow on the cobblestone path enhances the texture and authenticity of the setting. The artist skilfully uses subtle brushwork to create a peaceful atmosphere, inviting the observer to imagine the stories exchanged in this tranquil, timeless slice of rural life. Each element in the painting, from the gentle greenery climbing the walls to the distant figure near the archway, contributes to the scene's immersive and picturesque quality.
Mathilde Frances was born in Saint-Pons and died in nearby Montpellier. She was known for her landscapes and portraits . She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and was a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens. Her works were exhibited in Paris at the Salon of French Artists, where she became secretary in 1922.
