Impressive bronze sculpture of a horse’s head, created by Spanish contemporary artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo (b. 1970). This large-scale work (height 100 cm, width 150 cm, depth 60 cm) reflects Sánchez Castillo’s fascination with history, power, and public memory. The piece forms part of the artist’s celebrated 2004 project “Perspectiva Ciudadana” (Citizen Perspective), through which he made accessible to the public the famous equestrian statue of King Philip IV by Pietro Tacca, located in Madrid’s Plaza de Oriente, opposite the Royal Palace. Tacca’s original 17th-century monument — designed with input from Diego Velázquez, court painter to the king — was revolutionary as the first equestrian statue in the world balanced solely on the horse’s hind legs. Sánchez Castillo reinterprets this historic masterpiece, isolating the horse’s head in a powerful, almost hyper-realist form that invites reflection on representation, power, and modern spectatorship. The sculpture bears the artist’s distinctive style: expressive realism, monumental scale, and impeccable technical finish.
Measurements: Height 100 cm × Width 150 cm × Depth 60 cm Provenance / Exhibitions: Other works by Fernando Sánchez Castillo are held in major institutions including the Basque Museum of Contemporary Art (Artium) and in Utrecht, The Netherlands. A commanding and museum-quality piece by one of Spain’s most significant contemporary sculptors.
