A rare pair of glazed ceramic wall masks, complete with their original labels. They depict two traditional japanese folk figures, daikoku and otafuku (okame). These pieces are vintage imports for "pier 1 imports" (estimated 1980s/1990s).
subject and style: the masks depict two deities/auspicious figures from japanese folklore, as described by the labels:
daikoku: the god of wealth and grains (one of the seven gods of fortune).
otafuku (okame): an "ugly" but pure-hearted woman, a symbol of happiness and good fortune (used in noh and okagura theater). Material and finish: the masks are made of ceramic (or porcelain) with a glossy white glaze. The details are finely painted. Base/back: each mask comes with an original black cord for wall hanging. Both retain their original paper label describing the subject and importer ("made expressly for pier 1 imports"). Ideal for collectors of japanese theater or folklore masks, for ethnic decor, or for anyone seeking a pair of symbols of luck and wealth.
