author federico zandomeneghi (venice, 1841 – paris, 1917) was one of the leading italian painters associated with impressionism. Trained at the academy in venice and then in florence, he came into contact with the macchiaioli circle, from whom he assimilated an interest in the immediate rendering of light and painting from life. In 1874, he moved permanently to paris, where he became friends with degas and renoir, participating in several impressionist exhibitions (from 1879 to 1886). His painting focused mainly on female figures captured in intimate, everyday scenes: domestic interiors, moments of personal grooming, reading, conversations. However, his women are not mundane portraits, but living presences, observed with delicacy and a certain melancholy. His light palette, soft brushstrokes, and balanced composition set him apart from other more vibrant impressionists, bringing him closer to the mellow and introspective sensibility of degas. In later years, he developed an intense use of pastels, a medium that allowed him to create soft tonal modulations and velvety surfaces, now considered among his most personal expressions. He died in paris in 1917, more recognized in france than in italy; it was only in the 20th century that italian critics fully reevaluated his work, identifying him as one of the most significant mediators between french modernity and italian figurative culture.
