French Renaissance limestone head of Christ, originating from the Lorraine or Champagne region, circa 1500.
A moving fragment from a monumental Crucifixion or a Christ of Pity group, carved in fine calcareous stone and bearing all the expressive intensity of late medieval sacred art.
The downcast stylised eyes, the finely trepanned crown of thorns, and the softly modelled hair are typical of the workshops active in eastern France around the turn of the 16th century, within the artistic orbit of the Master of Pont-à-Mousson.
The surface presents a beautiful, time-worn patina with traces of natural erosion, enhancing its authenticity and sculptural presence.
A refined and powerful piece for a collector or a high-end interior.
