In Gaia #31, Llorens Bach constructs the diptych in a vertical composition, elegantly marrying the sky and the earth. On the left, an abundant meadow of daisies; on the right, a blissful murmuration of starlings.

The appeal of this diptych, like many others in Llorens Bach's series 'Gaia', is the contrast of light and dark, and the expressive detail that unravels the nearer to the image the viewer is.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
