In Gaia #45, Llorens Bach finds relation between the murmuration of swallows and the density of flowerheads. The abundance of black shapes on the grey background are inverted in the second diptych underneath, where a cluster of bright, white flowerheads sit on a darkened backdrop.

Taken individually, each image is a whole perspective. And yet once they are combined they create a new harmonious whole, whose parts are both reflective and symptomatic of one another.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
