Originally known as n.a. Jørgensen, the danish furniture manufacturer bramin was founded in bramming, on the west coast of the jutland peninsula. During the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, the company produced seating, tables, and storage units in a style representative of the danish mid-century modern era.
based on bramin's catalogs and advertisements, we can confirm that n.a. Jørgensen launched the bramin brand around 1957 or 1958. In the early 1960s, bramin's advertising campaigns promised "deres garantie for kvalitet form og function" or "quality, form, and function guaranteed," using bold, modern imagery. From this point onward, n.a. Jørgensen møbelfabrik, with its more traditional positioning, took a backseat. It wasn't until the mid-1960s that the famous bramin logo was created, with the central "a" written in a lowercase, rounded font that sets it apart from the other uppercase letters.
during its heyday, bramin collaborated with many renowned danish designers, including johannes andersen, hans olsen, kurt østervig, and frank reenskaug. However, it was arguably with h.w. Klein—a norwegian designer who moved to denmark in 1960 to work for the company—that it maintained its most fruitful relationship. Klein's most famous design is the ønskestolen (mid-1960s), a tufted leather lounge chair with a five-star swivel base, but he is also known for his wide range of living and dining room sets and storage solutions. Other memorable bramin designs include the classic rocking chair no. 182 by reenskaug (circa 1958) and the distinctively asymmetrical chair no. 168 by olsen (circa 1956).
for decades, the bramming area was a major center of the danish furniture industry, boasting as many as 20 factories at its peak. Hit particularly hard by the global recession of the early 1980s, many bramming-based companies closed, including bramin. Following its closure, klein relocated to san francisco. Although much of its history has been lost to time, the company's prolific furniture production has found a second life in today's vintage market. This piece has an attribution mark,
