Gaia Diptych #48 by Jaume Llorens Bach is a 18cm x 24cm Black and White print on Premio Kozo gsm White Paper by Awagami Factory.
Edition of 10 + 2 Artist Proofs.
In Gaia Diptych #48, Llorens Bach catches the eeriness of autumn in two parts which become one whole. The bare branches and stems of plants reach into the air, and yet the skeletal branches of the tree that has shed its leaves resembles a close up photograph of a plant's roots, reaching down into the earth to continue growing.
Whether reaching to the earth or the sky, this diptych encapsulates the entire life cycle of a growing plant.
The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.
In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023. Signed by Maker,Numbered
