In this diptych 70b by Jaume Llorens Bach, we are asked to contemplate more than the simple structure and form of nature. Here, we are asked to meditate on the concepts of life and death, heaven and hell.

Jaume Llorens Bach achieves this thematic juxtaposition by rendering two trees in opposing compositions. On the top, an almost sepia-hued image of a skeletal tree whose leaves are starting to shed as it enters the mellowness of the fall season. It may be a larger tree, but Llorens Bach chooses to depict it from a removed distance, allowing it to generously occupy the vast space of soft sky.

Below, the abundantly dressed branches of a berry tree stretch and creep across a darkened sky, a light source shining on the undersides of its branches. By inverting the position of the tree, Llorens Bach subtly demonstrates the fluidity with which nature's finest creations can be interpreted.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
