Gaia Diptych #4 by Jaume Llorens Bach is a 18cm x 24cm Black and White print on Premio Kozo gsm White Paper by Awagami Factory.
In Gaia 4, Llorens Bach plays on the similarity of form. On the right of this diptych, the usually calm surface of the water has been disrupted by a flurry of raindrops, which cast a series of splashes that create concentric circles.
These concentric circles are reflected by the unique flower structures that Llorens Bach situates just to the left.
In this way, we realise that there is nothing original under the sun. Everything that we see we have seen before, and Jaume Llorens Bach allows his diptychs to reflect this.
The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.
In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023. Signed by Maker,Numbered
