In this diptych, Gaia 59, Llorens contrasts form and texture, as well as light and shadow.

A dense plume of soft white clouds gently blows out from the darkened sky above, while the murmuration of birds stands out against a softly clouded sky that is light, bright, and mostly white.

In the top aspect of the diptych the brightness of the sun's rays casts a light glow through the sky and into the dense cluster of clouds, while a singular swallow wheels and arcs in the foreground, casting a dramatic and sharp silhouette against the lightness.

In the bottom section, the murmuration of swifts is captured as they briefly separate and dart across the sky.

In juxtaposition with one another we can see how each component acts as a signifier for the other, and also for the whole.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.

'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023.
