Earth and sky are inverted in this diptych from Jaume Llorens Bach's ongoing body of work, 'Gaia'.

The lily pond, with its leaves and lily pads, reflect the trees in the bright sunlight above which simultaneously stretch and writhe into the branches of the trees below.

By connecting earth and water, Llorens Bach shows us that all is united in nature.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
