In this almost seamless diptych by Jaume Llorens Bach, the horizon and the land blend smoothly into one invisible line.

A path leads the viewer's eye from the foreground straight through the landscape of this woodland path to the backdrop, where our eyes are dramatically affronted by a mountain range that traces into the distance. Above a mountain peak, in the turmultuous sky, a singular white cloud floats lightly.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.

'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023.
