author pompeo massani (florence, 1850 – florence, 1920) was an italian painter known above all for his brilliant and witty genre scenes. Trained at the academy of fine arts in florence under pollastrini, he soon made a name for himself with paintings set in bourgeois interiors or taverns, populated by card players, musicians, cheerful tables, patrons, and colorful characters, often captured in comical or convivial situations. His painting is distinguished by its attention to detail, skill in rendering fabrics and furnishings, and a warm and luminous palette. He participated in numerous exhibitions in italy and abroad, achieving particular success on the european and us collecting market. He was also a professor at the florentine academy. Massani is remembered as one of the leading interpreters of the tuscan tradition of brilliant and narrative costume scenes.
