This type of low tray on legs is often called an ozen (お膳) in Japan: a small personal serving “table” for a meal, tea set or ritual offerings. The rim is slightly raised so cups and bowls stay safely in place. The underside and legs are also lacquered, and the softly rounded corners give the piece a calm, contemporary look. The warm red lacquer pairs beautifully with ceramics, glass and textiles.

Highly decorative on a low table or sideboard as a platform for a vase, ikebana arrangement, tea set or a small composition of objects.

Also practical as a serving tray for tea, sake or snacks.

We have several examples in stock; they are designed to be stacked and together form a beautiful set for table or ceremony.

In good vintage condition, with only light signs of use in the lacquer that show the piece was genuinely used in Japan. See less
