While we continue chatting—often loudly debating events that happened centuries ago—we peel mandarins and crack open nuts. At large gatherings with more than 20 guests, it’s not unusual to argue over who gets to use the single nutcracker on the table, all while holding a grudge against some second cousin for an ancient slight.
