Alabaster sculpture from the late 19th - early 20th century of "Eros and Anteros".
Period: Late 19th / early 20th century
Dimensions: L 35 x W 46 x H 40 cm
Origin: Italy
Aphrodite must have been truly desperate when she confided to Themis her despair at seeing her son Cupid remain a child forever. Wise Themis replied that the god of love would never grow up until he knew the love of a brother. So Aphrodite and Ares gave birth to Anteros. The two brothers became inseparable, and the firstborn grew up. Cupid continued to shoot his arrows to ignite passion and push toward the pursuit of beauty. Anteros protected reciprocated love. But if Anteros left, Cupid became a child again. Because Love. to grow, it needs to be reciprocated, it needs awareness and a common path.
