A fine vintage porcelain-gilt ashtray (circa 1990s) by bernardaud, the storied limoges manufacturer established in 1863. This one depicts a voluptuous parisienne with a 1920s hairstyle, the heyday of the art deco era. This splendid porcelain piece is from bernardaud's incredible metropoles series of the world's grandest cities. There is a regal gold trim. The bottom is made of real leather and acts to protect the surface upon which it is placed. On one side there is a french inscription: “densité des granits. Raffinement des ors poudrés”, or translated, “density of granites. Refinement of powdered golds.” it’s not a technical , but rather, a literary or conceptual phrase — the kind of poetic language bernardaud often uses in limited-edition collections or design collaborations. The piece is in very good overall condition. Maker's mark on the underside: 'bernardaud limoges france.'
