"Bari" mahogany sideboard by Ferdinando Meccani, 1969.
Beautiful and rare mahogany sideboard designed by Ferdinando Meccani in 1969. Made by Meccani Arredamenti, Cascina (Pisa), Italy.
The "Bari" sideboard, so-called because it was designed for the Fiera del Levante in Bari, is a square cabinet with two doors and an internal shelf. It measures 80 x 50 x 88 cm (31.5 x 19.7 x 35.5 in). Its 8 cm high base, partially recessed and hidden from view because it is in shadow, ideally suspends and highlights the square volume with the pattern of the doors.
This relatively early design from the 1960s already presents the fundamental traits of the artist's artistic language, where architecture, sculpture, painting, and design merge to create colors, shadows, volumes, and chiaroscuro within a context based on geometry and symmetry.
Soon after, iconic pieces were created such as the "Madia" (1970), a sculptural piece of furniture, the "Triangolare" cabinet (1970), and, later, in 1978, the "Corinto" cabinet with its curved, hollowed-out center.
The base of the "Bari" sideboard is a recessed volume that highlights the raised squares of the doors, which converge in a pyramidal fashion toward the center and create a vertical fracture, set back and in shadow; the sculptural piece's relationship with light and perspective is exceptional.
A beautiful 20th-century design object, in excellent condition.
