a striking example of danish sculptural lighting, this rare barcelona pendant lamp was designed in the early 1970s by bent karlby, one of denmark’s most influential mid-century lighting designers. While the barcelona model was originally produced by lyfa, other authorised manufacturers—such as dema—also produced the design during the 1970s due to its popularity.

a maker’s mark reading “t / type 20980” is present, along with the original “barcelona” label, confirming the model designation.

design & construction
the pendant features eight stacked aluminium shades, a signature karlby construction developed to diffuse light softly while eliminating glare. The carefully spaced louvres create a warm, layered light effect and a visually weightless sculptural form—equally beautiful lit or unlit.

the shades are held together by three metal rods with spacers, maintaining precise separation between each layer. The bulb holder is mounted on a white perforated internal disc, a hallmark karlby detail for improved cooling and diffusion.
