Yrjö Kukkapuro studied architecture under Ilmari Tapiovaara at the Institute of Industrial Arts. After graduating, he founded his own studio in Heslinki in 1959: Studio Kukkapuro. His work focused on combining aesthetics and ergonomics. His most famous piece, the Karuselli Chair offered here, is a prime example of this creative approach. Created after several years of development, this piece of furniture was first presented at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1965 and caused an international sensation. The chair was included in the collections of, among others, the MoMA/New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum/London, and the Guggenheim Museum/Bilbao. In 1975, the New York Times even named it the most comfortable chair in the world. In Germany, the Karuselli chair appeared in the science fiction television series Space Patrol Orion.

Kukkapuro, born in 1933 in Vyborg (now Vyborg, Russia) in his grandfather's farmhouse, died on February 8, 1925, in Kauniainen, Finland.
