This 6x8 antique African textile represents a rich new curation from Rug & Kilims Tapestry & Textile Collection, believed to be a Bondoukou indigo cloth of particularly rare size and condition for this provenance of flatweaves; made with handwoven wool and originating from West Africa circa 1910-1920.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may know the Bondoukou indigo cloth-weaving tradition from its roots in the early 20th century, with those like this piece from its early foundations being particularly exceptional finds today, known to rival other major rug, tapestry and textile weaving traditions (such as Moroccan rugs and flatweaves) in the same period with their subtle complexity.
This piece enjoys the archetypal play of indigo and navy blue with more neutral tones like beige-brown in its geometric pattern, though keen eyes will further admire kisses of salmon pink accents in the deceptively simple repeat.
Bondouko cloths remain both fabulous works of rustic charm and tribal folk art as much as testaments to the history of a rich craft, and any connoisseur will recognize this one as an unsung exemplar of the type.
Condition:
This antique Bondouku textile further enjoys good condition for its age and origin, though better suited in its fine weave to wall-hanging projects. Those interested in potential use on the floor as a Kilim should inquire first.
