This is a piece by Juan Segura (b. 1898?), a Miami-based sculptor whose works were made of fiberglass, rather than metal, and were painted and had a bronze or gold-toned finish; some were even gilded. The panels were produced by his company, Segura Studios Inc., in Hialeah, Florida primarily in the 1960’s. The company ceased to exist in the mid 1970’s.
This is a large, hand-painted fiberglass bas-relief wall sculpture depicting an energetic coastal village scene. The artwork shows several figures working along the shoreline—hauling boats, pulling ropes, and preparing for the day’s catch. The composition is full of movement and texture, with deep sculptural carving that creates strong shadows and dimensionality.
The palette features earthy tones—warm browns, muted reds, olive greens, and touches of turquoise blue in the water—giving the piece a rustic, weathered, almost sun-baked Mediterranean or Caribbean feel. The boats and figures are stylized with exaggerated, expressive forms, adding a dramatic, story-telling quality.
The material appears to be molded fiberglass or composite resin with textured, hand-applied paint. It is lightweight for its size and designed to hang on a wall as a single statement piece. Ideal for coastal décor, mid-century nautical interiors, or collectors of vintage relief sculpture.
